Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday announced that if former President Mahinda Rajapaksa returned to power he would alter the Constitution to allow women to be raped and sexually abused.
Wickremesinghe said this at a meeting organised for social media activists at Temple Trees. Speaking about the recent rape of a schoolgirl in Jaffna, Wickremesinghe pointed out that Rajapaksa’s supporters were trying to incite racism in the country by politicising this incident.
“Though pro-Rajapaksa activists are using this incident to sling mud at us now, during the previous regime some Provincial Councillors raped over 100 women and had parties to celebrate those actions. As a Government we oppose such actions regardless of ethnicity or religion,” he said.
Wickremesinghe added that the remaining Rajapaksa campaigners involved in politics were trying to create a revolution in Sri Lanka by using the Jaffna incident and questioned whether former President Rajapaksa had become so bankrupt as to criticise the current regime using a rape case.
“If the Rajapaksa regime was a Buddhist regime would they have tried to open casinos in the country, imported drugs? And would they have had night races outside the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy? However, we will not allow them to come into power again,” Wickremesinghe explained.
The Prime Minister also stated that after his Government came into power, corruption had been stopped and concessions had been given to the people.
“Apart from the things we have already done, we will do more for the people. We will create a better future for the people of this country,” he said.
