Police threw a tight security net around Aluthgama and Dharga Town in the Kalutara Distirct yesterday in anticipation of two campaign rallies organised in the area by Bodu Jana Peramuna candidate and Bodu Bala Sena’s controversial monk, Galagodaththe Gnansara Thera.
Aluthgama and the predominantly Muslim settlement of Dharga Town were the scenes of the worst religious riots in decades, with attacks on Muslim-owned homes and businesses killing three people and injuring dozens following a rally in Aluthgama organised by the BBS.
Police deployed riot teams and STF commandos, and were ready with water canon to check any breach of the peace in the area during the rallies. A team of senior police officials including Senior DIG Pujitha Jayesundera had been sent to the area to ensure calm. The BJP rally garnered small crowds in both towns.
Gnanasara Thera is contesting as a candidate in the Kalutara District, going back as it were to the scene of chaos his organisation is accused of causing in June last year. (DB)
