Housing and Construction Minister Sajith Premadasa yesterday asserted that the Government would complete a project to construct 50,000 houses within the year.
After assuming his duties at the ministry, Premadasa stressed that providing shelters to the poor was one of the main objectives of the Yahapalana Government.
“The 100-day caretaker Government promised to build 50,000 houses all around the country. We are already working on 35,000 houses. We pledge to complete our target of 50,000 houses by the end of this year,” he asserted.
The minister pointed out that between 1,500,000 and 2,000,000 families were still suffering with this housing problem.
“My father President Ranasinghe Premadasa wanted to build houses for everyone who did not have shelter to live in. The sad story is that after 15 years, millions of locals still do not have their own house,” he noted. Premadasa went on to state that the Government would never misappropriate State funds allocated for development projects.
“There will be no space for fraud or corruption. We will resist those 100%.” Speaking about his ministerial position, Premadasa asserted that it was a great privilege to work with Deputy Housing Minister Indika Bandaranayake.
“I will never consider the political differences of my subordinates and will serve in the country’s best interest,” he stated.
