The Government is considering obtaining assistance from Thailand to build a Bhikkhu hospital and a university for Buddhist monks, Minister of Primary Industries Daya Gamage said at the inaugural meeting of Visuddimagga International Buddhist conference at the Speaker’s official residence.
The matter was discussed during a recent visit to Thailand by a Sri Lankan delegation including himself, said the Minister.
The objective of the conference is to further strengthen the national programme to nurture Buddhism and to formulate the policies required.
Its founder Ven. Dr. Nagoda Saddhaloka Thera has been appointed the Patron. Chairman of the conference is Minister Karu Jayasuriya, Minister Daya Gamage is the Deputy Chairman and Prof. Indrani Munasinghe is the Secretary.
Members of its Advisory Board are Ministers Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Harin Fernando, Gayantha Karunatilake and Sujeeva Senasinghe, Diyawadana Nilame of Sri Dalada Maligawa Nilanga Dela, Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi and ITN Chairman Hemasiri Fernando.
