Minister of Prison Reforms Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, D.M. Swaminathan presented land ownership certificates to over 190 families living in the Sidhambarapuram village in Vavuniya, on Thursday.
The Ministry of Prison Reforms Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs has presented the land ownership certificates in an effort to bring normalcy to the lives of the conflict-affected families and to give them the opportunity to establish permanent housing.
The Sidhambarapuram village was a camp that housed families who were in temporary settlements for the last 25 years. The villagers were temporarily settled in this area in 1990 after they were displaced due to the conflict situation in the North.
Addressing the gathering Minister Swaminathan said the government is committed to ensuring the well-being of the Tamil Community.
“We are committed to ensuring the well-being of the Tamil Community and all projects implemented in the North are to benefit the people living in these areas. The Tamil community should understand that the present government has not done anything that would adversely affect them,” Minister Swaminathan said.
Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C.V Wigneswaran also participated in the event.
