India and Sri Lanka have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support livelihood of the fishing and farming communities in Hambantota district.
High Commissioner of India Y.K. Sinha and Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development W.M.M.R. Adikari signed the MoU in the presence of Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera.
The project envisages gift of equipment and tools such as grub hoes, bicycles, life jackets and sewing machines, worth Rs. 300 million, to the fishing and farming communities in Hambantota district. More than 75,000 people across the district will get direct benefit from the project.
The project will be implemented in consultation with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development and relevant local authorities.
The High Commission of India will float a tender to procure the gift items through a competitive bidding process.
