International designer Danit Peleg behind the world’s first fashion collection 3D printed using home printers will launch her latest series from Sri Lanka at SLDF 2016, following making a digital entrance at the South Asian Apparel Leadership Forum this Saturday.
Sri Lanka Design Festival 2016 is only a few days away, and is set to deliver a transformative shift to many industries, and especially the country’s mega success – apparel and fashion industry. Part of this transformative change is to establish Sri Lanka’s reputation as a nucleus that drives innovation in fashion while contributing a unique value proposition from the island.
To propose a unique story from Sri Lanka to the global fashion industry, SLDF is hosting Mercedes-Benz Fashion Runways under the theme ‘Travel Fashion’ which combines the country’s strengths as a travel destination and an apparel manufacturing nucleus: Parallel to this, making a strong statement about providing manufacturing design, and technological support as well as thought leadership to fashion innovation, Sri Lanka Design Festival (SLDF) will launch a revolutionary 3D printed fashion collection by the Israeli designer Danit Peleg who made headlines as the creator of the world’s first to use home printing technology to 3D print wearable fashion.
This collection stands for the thought shift and inspiration to reinvent, that SLDF aims to deliver to the local apparel industry as the fashion world transcends to one that merges tech and design to completely shift the apparel manufacturing game. Danit’s much-talked about collection will be part of SLDF’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Runways industry collections hosted on Saturday 5 November evening amidst a gathering of an international and local industry audience. Danit will also make a digital entrance at SLDF’s South Asian Apparel Leadership Forum to inspire the Lankan apparel and fashion industry as it prepares to enter in full gear, into a brand new manufacturing age.
Danit Peleg, 28, is a fashion designer based in Tel Aviv, Israel graduating from world-renowned Israeli Fashion School, Shenkar. She became a global fashion industry headliner when in 2015, for her graduate collection, Danit became the 
first in the world to design and 3D print an entire ready-to-wear fashion collection – created entirely at home.
Her collection and the potential that printing clothes could have on the fashion industry instantly captivated the attention of millions globally and was part of a worldwide dialogue that ensued on the future of apparel manufacturing. Even today, visionary apparel manufacturers and fashion industries are preparing themselves for this future where the power to manufacture and design will be entirely at the hands of the consumer who will become the lead driver of the fashion world.
Since this her breakthrough success in 2015, Danit’s work has continued to get international attention for its futuristic vision and for the Rio 2016 Paralympics Opening Ceremony, she was invited to use her 3D printing technique to design and print a dress for Amy Purdy, a double-leg amputee who performed a samba solo. This inspiring collaboration between the popular Paralympian and the revolutionary young designer sent a clear message of empowerment to the world, signifying how the new-age fashion will be one that self-empowers the consumer through technology that grants all-access to knowledge and opportunities to anyone and everyone regardless of their location, gender, physical ability or experience.
Today Danit is preparing to launch her second collection from the Mercedes-Benz Runways of SLDF, elevating Sri Lanka to the limelight of the global fashion industry’s continuing discussion on how tech will change the face of fashion. This statement of spearheading fashion innovation from Sri Lanka will be an important part of the local apparel industry’s movement to establish itself as a new-age industry that is pro-tech, pro-design and pro-change.
When 3D printing first entered the market, it was predicted to change the face of manufacturing for many industries from fashion, product to even housing. Today, all these predictions are coming true as 3D printing increasingly becomes accessible allowing consumers to make their choices instantly. This however, poses a question on how the manufacturing industries will survive the future where the consumer takes on the role of the manufacturer; a continuing dialogue, which will be one of the key points discussed at SLDF’s South Asian Apparel Leadership Forum this Saturday.
Here, an inspiring gathering of best-breed thought leaders will lead the way to discuss how the future of manufacturing will be a specialised role that provides the services of a thought leader that drives research and innovation in design and product making. Here, the traditional roles where the consumer inspires the industry to manufacture will be reversed to a situation where the manufacturer leads the way with new ideas on technology, research on where design meets tech and ways of realising these, while the consumers will follow this lead and use their access to technologies such as 3D printing to self-create things to meet their needs.
In such a future where the manufacturer’s role becomes a specialised one that looks into simplifying processes, identifying new possibilities, introduction into Danit Peleg’s work has a special significance. Her initial 3D printed collection which was the first of its kind to made with home printing technology, and was created through a carefully researched and planned out process which took nine months of research and development to use FilaFlex filament &Witbox home printers for over 2,000 hours of printing (about 400 hours per outfit). Danit will make a digital entrance at the SLDF’s South Asian Apparel Leadership Forum aiming to inspire the local apparel industry to dive into the future of manufacturing.
As the Lankan apparel industry looks to enter into an age where there are massive new age opportunities to harness, the South Asian Apparel Leadership Forum will play the role of providing thought leadership through an informed transformative strategy.
