Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government Secretary Kamal Padmasiri said that the Private Sector has agreed to assist the recycling program of non-degradable garbage which was initiated by the ministry last week.
At a discussion held at the Ministry yesterday, Padmasiri said the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) and the Solid Waste Management Association have decided to sign an agreement on recycling non-degradable waste with the Ministry.
Accordingly, Padmasiri has requested the Solid Waste Management Association to join this program considering it a social service, putting aside economic targets. All the necessary requirements will be supplied from the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government, he added.
At the discussion, members of the association pointed out that there is recyclable and non-recyclable solid waste and that a list of recyclable waste will be given to the CMC.
The Association added that the decision taken to recycle waste is admirable and they agreed to cooperate fully.
In addition, officers of the CMC were directed to keep litter bins near flats in Colombo to collect segregated waste. Police officers will be on surveillance at all times to inspect whether the garbage is segregated correctly.
