Piyumi Fonseka of the Daily Mirror left for MASCOM, the premier mass communication academy in India, last week as the recipient of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Journalism Scholarship for 2016-2017.
She received the scholarship after winning the Denzil Peiris Young Reporter of the Year award at the annual Journalism Awards for Excellence program jointly organised by the Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Press Institute.
The Lakshman Kadirgamar Journalism Scholarship is presented by the Lakshman Kadirgamar Foundation in collaboration with Kottayam-based MASCOM managed by India’s leading newspaperhouse, Malayala Manorama, in memory of the late Sri Lankan Foreign Minister.
Denzil Peiris was a reputed Editor at the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. (Lake House) and later edited The South magazine in the United Kingdom.
Fonseka will be under the tutelage of Prof. Thomas Oommen, a well-known journalism teacher who has tutored several leading journalists working in India and abroad.
She is the seventh recipient of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Journalism Scholarship to be trained at MASCOM.
