Tea industry kicks off 2017 with record monthly sales average in January

The country’s tea industry has kicked off the New Year with a record monthly sales average in January.

Ceylon Tea Brokers PLC said the total monthly average of Rs. 596.26 per kilo recorded in January was the highest ever monthly average recorded surpassing the previous highest of Rs. 581.33 realised in November 2016.

“High-grown average of Rs. 619.55 per kilo and Medium-grown average of Rs. 549.14 per kilo for the month of January is the highest ever monthly elevational averages recorded,” the produce broker added.

January Tea Sale Averages at Rs. 596.26 (USD 3.97) was above Rs. 185.32 per kilo achieved a year earlier. High-grown average was higher by Rs. 207.72 as against January last year. Medium-grown average was Rs. 175.34 per kilo higher and Low-grown by Rs. 181.66 per kilo.

Ceylon Tea Brokers said January 2017 averages in USD terms shows a significant gain vis-à-vis January 2016 and 2015 as well as in rupee terms.

The total CTC average for the month of January 2017 recorded Rs. 573.71 per kilo. CTC High-grown was Rs. 573.81 and CTC Medium-growns was at Rs. 559.61, whilst CTC Low-grown recorded Rs. 580.67 per kilo.
