Private Medical College Parents’ Society issues statement

The Private Medical College Parents’ Society in a statement has strongly opposed the recent developments that the country witnessed in terms of the countrywide protests of university students which culminated with a walk to Colombo.

“Whilst we sympathise with the students involved who have been misguided and led away from their studies which should be the priority, it is the view of the society that a few bankrupt political parties as well as politicians rejected by the masses and a very small section of Government doctors are attempting to use students to further their narrow-minded and selfish motives,” the society said in its statement.

“We strongly appeal to students and parents not to fall prey to these unscrupulous elements urging them to conduct such protests and civil disobedience campaigns and return to their studies to ensure that the future of both the younger generation and the country is secure and bright,” it added.

The society also said that SAITM students were citizens of this country and they too should have freedom of education.

“We also wish to strongly emphasis that there is a clear difference in the distinction of free education which in this case is free of payment and freedom of education,” it pointed out. “All peace-loving citizens of Sri Lanka are requested to respect this right of the student community as well as urge, especially university students, to return to their studies for which reason they are at the said institution,” the Private Medical College Parents’ Society statement added.
