Fulfilling its role as the National Telecommunication Service Provider, the SLT group established connectivity at Meeyagala, a remote village located in Uva, Sri Lanka. Following the request from the Venerable Kahawe Maithree Nayaka Thero from Meeyagala, the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, SLT and Mobitel visited the location and observed that there was no connectivity and people in the village were facing a lot of difficulties in connecting with their loved ones.
As per the direction given by Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka Director General Oshada Senanayake, SLT Mobitel immediately established connectivity within a week by putting up a repeater solution and plans were initiated to provide high-quality voice services and high-speed 4G broadband services for the area within three weeks.
The ceremonious opening of the site was graced by TRCSL Director General Oshada Senanayake, senior representation from both SLT and Mobitel along with Government officials. Further, SLT and Mobitel handed over computers and other necessary equipment to help support the educational activities of children in the Meeyagala area.
Commenting on the initiative, SLT and Mobitel Group CEO Lalith Seneviratne said, “As the nation’s telecommunication provider, we are privileged to fulfill TRCSL’s request in providing extended coverage to all Sri Lankans. I would like to thank the Director General of TRCSL, Oshada Senanayake for his tireless efforts towards creating digital inclusivity for the current and future generations.” In 2019 alone, Mobitel invested over $ 100 million for network expansion and will continue to expand coverage throughout the island. Further, the SLT group is committed to supporting the Government’s initiative of ‘Gamata Sanniwedanaya’ which aims to provide superior, uninterrupted and high-quality connectivity and broadband experience to every Sri Lankan.
