China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd. has been awarded the contract to construct a 27.7-km-long tunnel as part of the 95.86-km-long North Central Great Canal Project.
Cabinet approved the proposal tabled by the Minister of Irrigation Chamal Rajapaksa to award the contract to the company as recommended by the Standing Committee on Procurement appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers. International competitive bids have been invited to select a suitable contractor.
The 27.7-kilometre tunnel will be constructed from Koduruwawa to Namalpura via the conserved forests and sanctuaries in Girithale and Hurulu as a package of Mahaweli Water Security Investment Program which is implemented with funds of the Asian Development Bank.
