The Kurunegala Magistrate yesterday decided to postpone the case filed against Dr. Shafi Shihabdeen of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital to 12 December to provide time for the report by the medical experts attached to the Colombo University Medical Faculty to be submitted to court.
Dr. Shihabdeen is accused of allegedly amassing assets through suspicious means, performing illegal sterilisation surgeries and having links to terrorist activities. When the case was taken up for the fourth time on Friday morning the Criminal Investigation Department presented a 12 page report on the ongoing investigations.
At this point Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) B.S. Thisera informed court that a Deputy Director of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital is seeking information on him and his family and that it was hindering investigations. He also informed court that a separate inquiry has begun into the activities of the Deputy Director.
The CID also submitted a report on the findings of tests done on fallopian tubes at the Castle and De Soysa hospitals in Colombo. A report including statements from the anaesthesiologists of the Kurunegala Teaching hospital was also submitted to Court by the CID.
