No documents at EC confirming GR citizenship, says former Minister

The Election Commission (EC) has not received any documentation to support assertions by SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa that he has renounced his US citizenship, a former minister claimed yesterday.

Milroy Fernando, who served as a minister in the previous Government and now supports NDF presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa, visited the EC seeking the documents which Rajapaksa’s lawyers claimed were handed over to the EC.

“The Election Commission informed me that they were not given any documents with regards to the SLPP candidate’s citizenship which means he is still a US citizen,” Fernando said.

Meanwhile, a citizen yesterday filed a Right to Information (RTI) application with the EC asking for copies of any documents available at the Commission relating to Rajapaksa’s citizenship.
