  • PM Rajapaksa will face first Question Time on 5 Feb.
  • Practice introduced by last Govt. in 2016
  • MPs on both sides can raise questions directly to PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will face the Premier’s Question Time for the first time since his appointment when Parliament meets next week.

The half-an-hour Question Time allows MPs from both sides of the House to raise questions directly to the Prime Minister, a practice introduced by the last Government in 2016.

Question Time is held on the first Wednesday of the sitting week of Parliament, and is restricted to four questions, to be addressed to the Prime Minister. MPs who wish to raise questions are required to hand in their queries to Parliament officials a day earlier.

Prime Minister’s Question Time is a tradition in the House of Commons, with half-an-hour allocated every sitting Wednesday for MPs to direct questions at the PM. However, no prior notice of questions is given in the UK.

Parliament will convene next week on Wednesday, 5 February.
