RW gives statement to CID on bond scam

Former Prime Minister and United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday gave a statement to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in connection with the controversial bond scam that took place during his Government.

The statement was recorded from Wickremesinghe at his residence in Colombo, Police said.

Wickremesinghe was instrumental in the appointment of former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran in 2015 and later gave him a position as an advisor after his removal. The Central Bank was also under his purview during the time of the bond scam, which was also investigated by a Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) appointed by former President Maithripala Sirisena.
