The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) yesterday appointed a committee to take action on the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
The decision to appoint the committee was taken at a SJB Parliamentary group meeting held yesterday; SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara told Daily FT. The meeting had been chaired by the Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
The SJB plans to take their concerns about the proposed 20A to the Supreme Court after the ‘first reading’ of the draft proposal in Parliament on 22 September.
The Committee consists of Lakshman Kiriella, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, Kabir Hashim, Mano Ganeshan, Eran Wickramaratne, Dr. Harsha De Silva, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Shiral Lakthilaka, Surendra Fernando, and Ranjith Madduma Bandara.
The SJB stated last week that they will consult other Opposition parties on defeating the proposed 20th Amendment, with the Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stating that the SJB will introduced a yet unknown ‘20 Plus’ Amendment, which will bring constitutional change but retain many salient features of the 19th Amendment.
