Sri Lanka and the Philippines will sign six Memorandum of Understandings this week, during the historic visit of President Maithripala Sirisena to Manila.
The MoUs include focus on broader areas of agriculture, fishery and dairy and animal husbandry, tourism promotion, foreign employment cooperation, higher education, and defence cooperation. Cabinet this week approved the MoUs to be signed.
President Sirisena left yesterday on a five-day visit, first by a Sri Lankan leader, on the invitation of the Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte.
During his visit to Philippines, the President is expected to further strengthen the political, economic and cultural ties between the two countries and hold bilateral discussions.
Sirisena is also scheduled to visit the Asian Development Bank Headquarters in Manila and the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, and the President will hold bilateral discussions with the President of the Asian Development Bank Takehiko Nakao.
Diplomatic relations were established between Sri Lanka and the Philippines in 1961, with the Government of the Philippines opening a legation in Colombo.
