President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed to close down the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Head Office until he returns from an overseas trip on 30 December, highly placed Party sources said.
The decision was taken during a meeting on Monday, where he ordered the post of District organiser scrapped, leaving only the post of Electoral organiser.
Instead of the District organiser post, the Party will create a new post called District manager.
When the decision was announced, several District organisers protested against the move, creating a tense situation, Party General Secretary Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa told Daily FT.
Some members also protested against the decision to form an alliance with the newly formed Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), sources within the SLFP told Daily FT.
However, Prof. Piyadasa claimed the decision to close the Head Office was not related to Monday’s meeting, noting that President Sirisena decided to grant holidays to the SLFP Head Office staff, as there was no activity scheduled till 30 December.
