Opposition Leader and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday rested the knowledge of which election first to God, saying no one else knows.
In response to a question posed during a breakfast meeting with English and Tamil media editors, Rajapaksa implied that all others are scared of Provincial, General and Presidential Elections, but “the Opposition is ready for any election”.
Prof. G.L. Peiris, who was associated with Rajapaksa during the meeting, said that the term of six Provincial Councils have lapsed and two more (Southern and Western) will suffer the same fate by 20 April. “So very soon, we will have eight of the nine Provincial Councils non-operational. Hence elections must be held,” he added.
Rajapaksa said that soon after his regime defeated terrorism, the country ushered in democracy by holding elections in the North and East. “However, today, even the TNA MPs are not demanding Provincial Elections,” said Rajapaksa, noting the stance implies the Tamil party was conniving with the Government.
