Health authorities state that 706 persons tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total number of patients detected in the island to 67,115.
According to the Department of Government Information, 704 persons who tested positive for the virus yesterday were associates of the Peliyagoda COVID-19 cluster. The Divulapitiya, Peliyagoda, and Prisons triple clusters have thus risen to 63,120. The daily count included two foreign arrivals as well.
The total count also includes 1,929 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad, 950 Navy personnel and their contacts, 651 persons linked to the Kandakadu cluster and 150 foreigners. The district distribution of COVID-19 patients records 24,168 persons from Colombo, 13,452 persons from Gampaha and 4,563 persons from Kalutara. Beyond the Western Province, 2,660 persons from Kandy, 1,483 persons from Galle and 1,373 persons from Kurunegala have also tested positive for COVID-19 to date.
This includes the 711 COVID-19 patients detected on Wednesday, of which, 236 were from Colombo, 93 were from Gampaha, 74 were from Kurunegala, 63 were from Galle and 60 were from Kandy.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, 6,209 persons are currently under medical care, of which 340 persons are at the Bingiriya Treatment Centre, 336 persons are at the Punani Treatment Centre and 332 persons are at the Giriulla Treatment Centre. Hospitals are also monitoring 706 persons suspected of having COVID-19.
The Epidemiology Unit adds that 60,567 persons have recovered from COVID-19 to date. Among persons discharged yesterday are 72 persons from the Dambadeniya Treatment Centre, 54 persons from the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital and 53 persons from the Rambukkana Treatment Centre.
The Health Promotion Bureau states that 1,762,354 PCR tests have been performed in the country, including 14,860 tests on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana yesterday said that 121,000 persons are currently undergoing quarantine in the country; with Gampaha being the district with the most number of persons undergoing quarantine.
“It has been revealed that certain persons do not comply with these regulations. An individual must remain within their residence when directed for quarantine and legal action can be taken against them if they leave the premises. A special operation using plain-clothes men is already being carried out in this regard,” DIG Ajith Rohana said.
