The Muslim Federation of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has announced its key officials at its general meeting, held under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Rosewood Banquet Hall in Kalubowila on Monday.
According to the announcements, the National Leader of the Muslim Federation will be Ali Sabry PC, who is the President’s advisor on legal matters. National Organiser of the Federation will be A.L.M. Uwais Hajiar, former member of the Central Province Provincial Council, while its Secretary-General will be senior lawyer Razick Zarook PC, who is the Chairman of the Insurance Regulatory Commission.
Speaking to the media, Uwais Hajiar said such a Federation is a long-felt need of the Muslim community, which needs a common understanding, vision and goals for its progress and prosperity.
“We want to be partners in progress with the SLPP, which chalked out genuine and dedicated goals for the social uplift of the people,” Uwais Hajiar said.
He said the Federation hopes to set up branches in all 25 districts, in places where there is density of Muslim population. “We want to have separate departments for women’s affairs, professionals, academicians, youth, Ulamas (Islamic theologians) and politicians,” he said.
Uwais Hajiar said that the Federation is to function under the dynamic leadership of Ali Sabry, who has a vision to bring the community forward for its pristine glory. Now the membership for the Federation is open to all Muslims.
