Colombo Camporee which is the flagship event of Colombo Scouts, is one of the most iconic events in Sri Lankan Scouting history which is rooted with rich Scouting traditions. It is in this backdrop that the Colombo District Branch of Sri Lanka Scout Association has decided to organise the 55th Colombo Camporee 2020 in the form a fully virtual Camporee from 23-29 December, given the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. This Camporee will go down in history as the first-ever district or national level fully-virtual Scout Camp.
Commenting on this historic event, the District Commissioner of Colombo Amil Abeysundara stated: “Given the strength of Colombo Scouts membership, we are confident that this Camporee will be the biggest fully-virtual multi-day local event to be held in Sri Lanka with over 4,500 Scouts participating for a period of seven days and the first of its kind in Sri Lankan Scouting history. This is a proud moment for all of us Scouts and is a true reflection of how the Colombo Scouts have kept to their motto of ‘Be Prepared’ which has inspired many generations of Scouts around the world.”
Organising Commissioner of the 55th Colombo Camporee Supun Jayalath said: “The challenging times we live in inspired the Colombo Scouts to think out of the box and invent the concept of a Virtual Camporee, themed ‘Path to Invention’. This venture definitely would be the start of our path to reinvention and it is heartening to see the positive response we have received.”
The Organising Committee has made all arrangements to host a fully virtual Camporee experience for the Singithi, Cub, Junior, Senior and Rover Scouts of the Colombo District where they can participate in a comprehensive non-formal educational program including virtual campsite building, opening and closing ceremonies, 30 Skill-O-Rama activities, virtual campfire, cub day, cub talent show, Christmas carols, fireside chats with prominent personalities in the country, sessions on yoga and mental wellbeing, international cultural exchange programs, online workshops facilitated by partner organisations, etc. all from the safety of their homes.
