Dual COVID-19 cluster tops 21,000 with 878 new cases

The detection of 878 COVID-19 patients yesterday brought the dual COVID-19 cluster that emerged from Divulapitiya and Peliyagoda to 21,861 cases.

All persons who tested positive yesterday were associates of the Peliyagoda COVID-19 cluster, including prison inmates, the Department of Government Information stated. This is the highest daily cases reported, with the second highest being 866 recorded on 23 October.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 patients identified in the island to 25,410, of which 1,511 are Sri Lankan returnees from abroad, 950 are Navy personnel and their contacts, 651 are connected to the Kandakadu cluster, and 118 are foreigners.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 6,982 persons are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals. This includes 646 persons at the Punani Treatment Centre, 476 persons at the Bingiriya Treatment Centre, 332 persons at the Neville Fernando Hospital, and 319 persons at the Gallela Treatment Centre. Hospitals are also monitoring 467 persons suspected of having COVID-19.

The Epidemiology Unit adds that the number of COVID-19 recoveries in the island has risen to 18,304. Yesterday’s recoveries include 157 persons from the Kandakadu Treatment Centre, 99 persons from the Punani Treatment Centre, and 44 persons from the Kattankudy Hospital.

According to the Health Promotion Bureau, 848,814 PCR tests have been carried out in the island to date. This includes 13,423 tests on Tuesday.

A total of 545 COVID-19 cases were identified on Tuesday, of which 294 were detected in the Colombo District. This includes 77 cases from Slave Island, 66 cases from the Welikada Prison, 28 cases from Kotahena, and 22 cases from Borella.

Tuesday’s cases also include 130 from the Kalutara District, of which 96 were identified from Atalugama. 36 cases from the Kandy District and 22 from the Gampaha District were also identified on Tuesday.

The Epidemiology Unit states that a total of 9,456 COVID-19 patients have been detected from the Colombo District, along with 6,144 cases from Gampaha, 1,037 from Kalutara, 411 from Kandy, and 329 from Kurunegala.

In a statement issued yesterday, Sri Lanka Army stated that 6,461 persons were currently undergoing quarantine at 59 centres in the island.
