The Sri Lanka Scout and Guide Fellowship (SLSGF) will host the 15th Asia Pacific (AsPac) Gathering of International Scouts and Guides Fellowship (ISGF) in Colombo from 5-8 September.
ISGF is a worldwide organisation founded in 1953 for adults in support of scouting and guiding and aims to strengthen the dialogue between communities through community-oriented projects worldwide. Most of the members are former girl guides and scouts.
The Asia Pacific (AsPac) Region of ISGF consists of 10 Full Members (known as National Scout and Guide Fellowships) and eight Central Branch countries. The Sri Lanka Fellowship of Former Scouts and Guides has a history of over 60 years and is currently known as the Sri Lanka Scout and Guide Fellowship (SLSGF). SLSGF is a Full Member of ISGF.
This is the third time that Sri Lanka will host the AsPac Gathering, having held the first Gathering in Colombo in 1974 and fifth Gathering in 1983 in Bentota. The theme of this year’s Gathering is ‘Together with Friendship, Fellowship and Fun’. Speaking about the Gathering, which takes place once every three years, Satish Khanna, the Chairman of the Asia Pacific Region of ISGF, said: “It is a great honour for SLSGF to get an opportunity to host the AsPac ISGF gathering in Colombo for the third time. I think it will be full of friendship bringing a lot of fun.”
About 100 participants are expected to attend the four-day event to be held at Global Towers, Colombo 6, including a delegation from Sri Lanka. The Host Committee, which consists of members from the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association and Sri Lanka Scouts Association, are putting the final touches on a program that will showcase Sri Lankan culture and traditions and is expected to make participants nostalgic about their guiding and scouting days. The proceeds from the Gathering will be utilised to help scouts troops and guide companies in remote areas of Sri Lanka. SLSGF also organises fun events and other activities for its members.
