Gintota and Ampara violence victims compensated

The Government this week decided to pay compensation for those who were affected in the civil conflict in Gintota and Ampara, Cabinet Co-Spokesperson Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said yesterday. 

The General Treasury has been requested to release a total of Rs. 31,878,831 to pay the compensation. 

As per decisions made during a meeting on the subject, chaired by Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe, up to Rs. 100,000 will be paid for property damages, while a totally damaged place of worship will be paid Rs. 1,000,000, and compensation up to Rs. 500,000 will be paid for partially damaged religious places. Any claims over Rs. 500,000 should be paid on recommendation of the committee appointed by the Government Agent, Kandy, Resettlement, Rehabilitation, Northern Development and Hindu religious Affairs Minister D. M. Swaminathan told the Cabinet. 

As per estimates prepared by the Ministry, a total of 3,872,431 will be paid as compensation for property damages in Gintota, while a total of Rs. 685,000 is to be paid to victims in Ampara. The Jumma Mosque in Ampara is to be paid a total of Rs. 27,321,000 as per recommendation of the District Secretary, Swaminathan told Cabinet. (CD)
