Joint Opposition Parliamentarian Dilum Amunagma is to appear before the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) today for questioning.
Police media spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara told the Daily FT that the Parliamentarian had been summoned by the TID to be questioned with regard to the communal violence that took place in the Kandy district in March.
“He has been summoned by the TID for questioning on Tuesday morning,” he said, adding that the Parliamentarian would be interrogated at TID headquarters in Colombo. Meanwhile, the leader of the Sinhala extremist group Mahason Balakaya, Amith Weerasinghe, has been further remanded till 28 May along with others who were remanded in connection with the communal riots in Digana, Theldeniya and other parts of the Kandy district.
Over 300 suspects were arrested following the Kandy riots including a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Pradheshiya Sabha member and former member of the armed forces. As a result of the communal unrest, various Parliamentarians have been calling for the criminalisation of hate speech.
