The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka (MCSL) has urged all presidential candidates to take necessary measures to conduct a peaceful election with the cooperation of all concerned parties.
Issuing a statement, the MCSL urged the new president to uphold the democratic values that the country has been built upon over centuries.
“We hope that all parties, candidates and the new dispensation will ensure that rule of law is upheld in full and the aspiration of the people is fulfilled based on the promises made in their respective Manifestos,” said the statement.
The MCSL noted Sri Lanka is a country blessed with many resources but face obstacles in reaching country’s true potential due to a culture that values political advantages over the betterment of the nation.
“We join all Sri Lankans in looking forward to the new President to bring resolute change addressing all impediments and gaps.”
“The tragic event of the Easter Sunday attacks, its aftermath as well as our history of the unresolved cycles of violence should stand as testament that Sri Lanka needs a leader who has the ability to uphold justice, safety, security and dignity for every Sri Lanka, who will take all steps to secure peace and harmony among all its citizens, create an atmosphere of mutual trust and mutual respect among all communities and work towards a shared vision for our collective future.”
The MCSL said they would aspire to give meaning to the value of a Sri Lankan identity and equity amongst and for all people, while at the same time recognising the diversity and benefit of the varied cultures.
“Diversity and pluralism indeed need to be acknowledged as a unique strength for Sri Lankan prosperity. This twin paradigms need to be acknowledged as positive contribution and not as opposed to each other.”
“The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka had endeavoured to promote peace and harmony among all communities in Sri Lanka ever since its inception. We pledge to continue our work in cooperative with similar organisations, entities, state agencies to make our country a peaceful harmonious and prosperous place for all citizens.”
The MCSL urged all Sri Lankans to exercise their vote wisely, freely at the Presidential Election and wished the best to all candidates. The MCSL also noted they hope for a future of peace, harmony, inclusion and progress for the nation.
