Over 1.4 m COVID-19-affected families get relief: Govt.

Over 1.4 million families affected by COVID-19 have benefited from State relief programs, with 1,409,578 families receiving the Rs. 5,000 allowance given to low-income families and 43,376 families directed for home quarantine receiving provisions worth Rs. 10,000.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information (DGI), Rs. 7.56 billion has been released by the Treasury to carry out these relief programs from 1 October to 10 November. This includes Rs. 438 million to provide those undergoing home quarantine with sufficient rations.

As such, 7,500 families in the Colombo District, 7,000 families in the Gampaha District, 4,000 families in the Kalutara District, 2,961 families in the Kurunegala District, and 2,378 families in the Batticaloa District undergoing home quarantine have received provisions. The DGI adds that Rs. 7.04 billion has been allocated for the Rs. 5,000 allowance to be given to low-income families, including 544,254 in the Gampaha District, 466,720 in the Colombo District, and 262,000 in the Kalutara District.

In addition to this, 93,914 families in the Kurunegala District, 27,550 families in the Batticaloa District, and 15,140 families in the Ratnapura District have also received the allowance.
