Over 1,500 COVID-19 patients were detected in the island over the weekend, bringing the total number of COVID-19 patients to 58,430.
A total of 843 persons tested positive for the virus yesterday, of which 841 were associates of the Peliyagoda cluster.
The previous day, 724 COVID-19 patients were identified, of which 715 were associates of the Peliyagoda cluster and nine were linked to the prisons cluster. According to the Department of Government Information, 197 persons from Colombo District were among Saturday’s patients, of which 27 were from Colombo-1, 14 were from Colombo-12, and 12 were from Colombo-8.
The Department of Government Information adds that 110 persons from Kandy, 106 persons from Gampaha, 40 persons from Kurunegala, 38 persons from Galle, and 31 persons from Ratnapura also tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.
The district distribution of the total COVID-19 patient count in the country records 21,838 patients from Colombo, 11,857 patients from Gampaha, 3,896 patients from Kalutara, 2,165 patients from Kandy, and 1,180 patients from Galle.
The patients detected over the weekend expanded the triple COVID-19 clusters that emerged from Divulapitiya, Peliyagoda, and prisons to 54,551.
In addition to the triple clusters, 1,815 Sri Lankan returnees from abroad, 950 Navy personnel and their contacts, 651 persons linked to the Kandakadu cluster, and 148 foreigners are among the total number of COVID-19 patients detected in the island.
According to the Epidemiology Unit, 8,463 patients are currently under medical care and the active patients include 769 persons at the Punani Treatment Centre, 487 persons at the Bingiriya Treatment Centre, 452 persons at the Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital, and 411 persons at the Kopai Treatment Centre. Hospitals are also monitoring 783 persons suspected of having COVID-19.
The number of COVID-19 recoveries rose to 49,684 over the weekend. According to the Epidemiology Unit, 34 persons from the Bingiriya Treatment Centre, 32 persons from the Kahawatte Treatment Centre, and 29 persons from the Panideniya Treatment Centre are among those discharged from hospitals yesterday.
According to the Health Promotion Bureau, 1,593,668 PCR tests have been performed to date, including 17,523 tests carried out on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of the COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) yesterday stated that Nazeer Watte in the Wellawatte Police Division, Warana Temple Road and Hidra Mawatha in the Thihariya North and Thihariya East Grama Niladhari Divisions in the Nittambuwa Police Division, and Galoluwa East and West in the Minuwangoda Police Division have been released from isolation.
The NOCPCO added that a few areas in Galoluwa in the Minuwangoda Police Division have been newly isolated.
