Marking the 36th Anniversary of Black July, which falls this week, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday called on the Government to take measures to prevent a repetition of communal violence in the country.
Speaking to media at SLPP head office, Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma said peace and harmony among communities was the key to develop an economy. Black July falls on Wednesday. “The United National Party (UNP) was behind attacks of Black July and now they are introducing ‘White July’, which we view as something unacceptable. The entire country ran red with blood and it was a situation that cannot be described, which should not have happened,” he said.
Alahapperuma noted the SLPP will not promote hatred among any community and the party will consist of members from all communities. He pointed out that proper investigation needs to be conducted to find people responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks, which according to him, will help regain trust in national security and rebuild relations between communities.
“It has been three months but the Government has failed to arrest those responsible for the Easter Sunday attack and the most of the suspects were released on bail. Therefore public do not trust the Government anymore.”
He pointed out that the Government should stop political infighting and take measures to prevent any future attacks as well as work to promote harmony.
