Former Opposition Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday met with the Ambassador of Kuwait Khalaf M. M. Bu Dhhair to discuss the plight of Sri Lankan migrant workers in the country.
Premadasa had drawn the Ambassador’s attention to the safety and security of a large number of Sri Lankan workers who are in Kuwait at present. Most of the migrant workers are presently unemployed due to the COVID-19 outbreak and in a vulnerable state with little to no resources and access to services.
Premadasa’s meeting with the Kuwaiti diplomat came in the backdrop of 127 Sri Lankans repatriated from the country testing positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, raising concerns that the virus may be widespread among the migrant working community in Kuwait.
Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, the SJB Leader urged the Government to intervene without delay to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Sri Lankan migrant workers in Kuwait.
