A prominent underworld drug-leader Mohammed Azmir alias ‘Mamazmi’, was shot dead on Wednesday night at Borella, police said.
Initial report revealed that the suspect was arrested by the Special Task Force personnel with a weapon and some grenades in his possession during a raid in Maligawatta last night.
While the suspect was being transported in a jeep, he had tried to attack an STF officer in the jeep forcing the STF personnel to fire in defence, a senior police official said.
The injured STF officer was admitted to the hospital.
Mamazmi was wanted in connection with several criminal cases, including murders, selling drugs etc.
