Wewage Thusitha Ridmika Dep has been re-appointed as the President of the Sri Lanka Women Lawyers’ Association (SLWLA) for the second consecutive year of 2011/ at the 49th Annual General Meeting, which was held on 30 October 2011, after completing a very successful year 2010/2011.
The Chief Guest at the occasion was Attorney General Eva Wanasundara, PC. In this event, the members of the SLWLA felicitated the Attorney General as the first female Attorney General in Sri Lanka. High Court Judge Kumuduni Wickramasinghe also participated in the event.
Dep had her early education at De Mazenod College, Kandana and thereafter entered the Sri Lanka Law College in 1992 and took oaths in 1995 as an Attorney-at-Law.
She had obtained her LLB degree from the Open University of Sri Lanka in 2004 and also obtained the Post Attorney Diploma in Banking Law and Insurance Law, which was conducted by the Sri Lanka Law College and was awarded as the most outstanding student in the batch in 2008 along with a Merit pass. She read for her Master’s Degree in Law (LLM) from the University of Colombo.
Dep is presently working as the Assistant Manager Legal (Recoveries) at Hatton National Bank PLC.
She requested all the members and well-wishers of the association to provide information regarding the history and past events of the association, in order to include the information on the website, the domain name of which has been already registered as www.slwla.org. The site will be launched in the near future. Any details could be forwarded to [email protected].
The following members were appointed as the Office Bearers of the association: Yamuna Gunasekara and Pushpa Rupasinghe were appointed as vice Presidents.
Sandya Thalduwa was reappointed as the Secretary and Promuditha Senaratna as the Treasurer. Swarna Jayaweera and Jayanka Kahawevitharana were appointed as Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer and 18 Executive Committee members were also appointed.
As a President of SLWLA, Dep is geared to launch several new projects for the benefit of the women lawyers as well as Sri Lankan women and children who are in need. As the initial step, the committee has decided to commence legal aid programmes in various parts of the island for those who are not in a position to obtain legal advice.
Some past presidents have volunteered for this worthy cause. The first event/workshop of the year will be held in Jaffna in December 2011.
