The Sports Minister has approved the Sri Lankan team which was nominated by the National Carrom Selection Committee for the 8th International Carrom Federation (ICF) Carrom Championships 2019.

The unit will feature both the nation’s top-ranked men’s and women’s players.

This tournament will be held from 2-6 December in the Indian cities of Pune and Mumbai, under the aegis of the ICF and All India Carrom Federation, while being hosted by the Maharashtra Carrom Association and Pune Carrom Association.

The team will leave on 30 November and pool practices will commence within the Sports Ministry premises.

Nishantha Fernando and Joseph Roshita of Sri Lanka Navy hold the captaincy of the men’s and women’s teams respectively.

The ICF Championships are held once every four years and consists of six events, including the Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles. There are 16 countries that will participate in this year’s tournament including Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, France, Germany, Italy and the US.

Sri Lanka will participate in this tournament as the defending world champions in the men’s category and runners-up in the women’s segment.

Fernando, who claimed a world championship in the singles event in 2012 and Shaheed Hilmy, the defending national champion, are the leaders of the Sri Lanka squad.

However, the loss of Chamil Cooray, who migrated, and Chalani Liyanage, who will miss out due to personal reasons, will present the Sri Lankan team with a great deal of adversity.

CFSL Vice President Susantha Fernando and Assistant Secretary Karunaratne Jayasinghe will serve as the officials on this tour.

  • Nishantha Fernando (Captain) from the Sri Lanka Navy
  • Shaheed Hilmy from Royal College
  • Anas Ahamed from the Sri Lanka Army
  • Dineth Dulakshana from the Sri Lanka Air Force

Women’s team:

  • Joseph Roshita (captain) of Sri Lanka Navy
  • Maduka Dilshani from the Sri Lanka Army
