The Sri Lanka Women’s Sevens outfit looked confident to defend their title at the Borneo Rugby Sevens 2018, which will take place at the Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. This annual event is organised by Eagles Rugby Club.
Sri Lanka Women’s won the trophy last year, while the Men’s outfit was placed 6th in the tournament. This year, a total of 14 teams will compete in the Men’s tournament, while 8 teams will lock horns in Women’s event.
This rugby event has been held since 2010, originally called the IRB Borneo Sevens Tournament. In previous years, teams from Fiji, England, New Zealand and Australia too participated, but as of recently they are keeping away due to the tight schedule of the World Rugby Sevens series, which is around the year from November to June, giving the players only a break of 4 months.
Skipper Randika Kumudumali, speaking to the media said: “We prepared well for this event from last November onwards, according to the plan given by Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) under our coaches’, Sudath Sampath and Inthi Marikar, guidance. A good development in strength and conditioning of the team.” (SJ)
