The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has launched a new Professional Diploma in Sustainability, addressing the increasing demand for sustainability expertise within the finance sector. This initiative aims to equip finance professionals with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of sustainability and compliance in today’s business environment.

Offering a modular format, the diploma consists of four certificates covering key areas such as sustainability frameworks and ethics, sustainability strategy and management, sustainability reporting, and sustainability assurance. Participants will engage in over 60 hours of structured learning, culminating in a three-hour exam that tests their ability to apply this knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Global interest in the diploma has been overwhelming, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region and Singapore. The programme stands out from other certifications in the market, thanks to ACCA’s 120 years of experience in delivering quality and prestigious qualifications. This established reputation adds significant value to the diploma, reassuring prospective students of its credibility and relevance in today’s evolving financial landscape.

Feedback from registrants highlights their appreciation for the flexibility offered by the modular approach to the diploma. Many have noted that while the course maintains a rigorous academic standard, it can be adapted to fit individual schedules and learning needs. The option to take the final exam and earn the Professional Diploma in Sustainability is particularly appealing, allowing participants to gain a comprehensive qualification that reflects their commitment to sustainability.

Research from ACCA indicates that many businesses currently lack the essential skills required to transition to sustainable business models. With regulatory requirements around sustainability increasing globally, the demand for qualified professionals in this area is expected to grow. Helen Brand, ACCA’s Chief Executive, emphasised the critical role that finance professionals will play in driving sustainable practices within their organisations.

“The expertise of accounting and finance professionals is essential for making the progress the planet needs,” Brand stated. “This qualification aims to prepare them to address sustainability challenges and recognise that success is not just about profits, but also about sustainability and social value.”

In addition to the Professional Diploma, ACCA offers a suite of online learning programmes related to sustainability, including courses on Climate Finance in collaboration with the CFA and Mastering Sustainability Reporting. These programmes are readily available on ACCA Learning, providing additional resources for finance professionals eager to enhance their sustainability knowledge.

Enrolments for the Professional Diploma is now open, with the first exam scheduled for March 2025. As sustainability emerges as a central theme in corporate governance, the new diploma positions ACCA at the forefront of training finance professionals who can effectively contribute to this evolving landscape.
