B.P. De Silva (Pvt) Ltd (BPJSL), a fully owned subsidiary of the 152-year-old B.P. De Silva Holdings, announced the launch of the GemLUX™ system developed by sister company Porolis Technologies, at the Gem Tower. This groundbreaking approach leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) to innovate the gem industry. The event was graced by Mr. Sunil Amarasuriya, Chairman of B.P. De Silva Holdings.
GemLUX™ integrates cutting-edge technology in photomicrography, and AI for application in gemology to enhance the speed and accuracy of gemstone assessment. This innovative approach is poised to transform the industry by fostering greater transparency and trust between buyers and sellers.
"We are excited to introduce the GemLUX™ system, a testament to our commitment to innovation and excellence in the gem industry," said Mr. Vincent Wong, CEO of Porolis Technologies. "By harnessing the power of AI, we empower everyone from miners and gem traders to consumers with the tools they need to make informed decisions about gemstones quality."
At the heart of the GemLUX™ system, an intelligent, AI-powered tool analyzes gemstone images and data to provide accurate and reliable information about their identity and authenticity, as well as creating its unique digital fingerprint. The system's AI models are trained on a vast dataset of over 60,000 gemstones and labelled by FGA-qualified gemologists. BPJSL Gems together with Porolis Technologies intends to utilize blockchain technology in future with the GemLUX™ system to provide smart contracts, enabling gem miners to benefit from each transaction and resale of a stone, generating revenue for Sri Lanka and individuals in the gem mining community.
BPJSL Gems' deep roots in the gem industry, along with its jewelry manufacturing expertise and partnership with the Gemological Institute of Colombo (GIC), the leading gemological laboratory in Sri Lanka, uniquely position the company to drive this digital transformation.
Mr.Masaki Furuya, Advisor of GIC and Director of the Japan Germany Gemological Laboratory, delivered a talk titled "Origin Determination and Its Positive Impact to Sri Lanka." He delved into the scientific methods used to determine the origin of gemstones, emphasizing their impact on pricing and consumer confidence. He highlighted that the origin of a gemstone significantly influences its value, with stones from certain regions, especially Sri Lanka, commanding higher prices due to their rarity and geological characteristics. BPJSL Gems will always back their Sapphires with such origin certificates as evidence of Sri Lankan natural, untreated sapphires.
Mr. Sunil Amarasuriya reiterated his commitment to being a catalyst for change in the Sri Lankan Gem Industry. By ensuring Sri Lankan origin and ethical mining practices, he aims to enhance the international reputation of Sri Lankan gemstones and provide the country with a competitive edge. The event was well-received by gem business owners and miners, who praised BPJSL Gems' efforts to elevate the industry and increase revenue generation.
