Uzabase, a Tokyo-based business intelligence platform catering to clients worldwide, launched its Colombo-based research unit with just seven employees in 2016. By July 2022, in a little over six years, the Colombo branch marked the milestone of a team size of a hundred, expanding amidst one of the most challenging times for the country.
Recognizing Sri Lanka as a hub for varied and specialised talent, every year, the company added new verticals; three-quarters of the team comprises financial analysts, followed by a sizeable data team, customer support consultants, a human resources team, editors, product designer, content marketer, and software engineers. Today, Uzabase Sri Lanka is the second largest entity in the Uzabase group.
Growing despite strained working conditions is a testament to the company’s financial strength and its people-centric, community-oriented culture.
In 2022, the Sri Lanka team’s pay scale was revised thrice to compensate for rising inflation. As of July 2022, a Yen-pegged allowance was also introduced, accounting for around a 50% pay increase in the first seven months of this year. Additionally, the OPD scheme was increased by 50% along with a 75% increase in the hospitalization cover, along with a monthly WiFi allowance to all employees (including interns); a one-time work-from-home allowance was given to set up a comfortable home workstation.
Uzabase’s unique work culture is its greatest strength. Aligned with the company’s purpose, ‘Awaken a world of play in business, with our insights,’ the employees experience flexible working conditions as a norm, not an exception. Uzabase Sri Lanka’s employees are mostly based in and around Colombo, and as a way of supporting case-by-case challenges, they can decide how and where they work. Over 65% of its workforce comprises women, and each member's pay levels are fully transparent, pegged to competency alone; the company rewards execution by eliminating bell curve promotions—if everyone meets the criteria, they all get promoted. Unsurprisingly, Uzabase Sri Lanka received the “Great Place to Work” certification last October, with an employee satisfaction rating of over 93%. Based on the Global Qualtrics survey as well as compared to global peer averages, the Sri Lanka office has one of the highest figures within the group.
The community of employees, anchored by Uzabase’s “The 7 Values”, are encouraged to nurture their talent, be self-directed and motivated, communicate openly and transparently; to thrive in a culture that is orderly but not hierarchical, one that values ideas, so much so that despite one’s designation, any process can be reviewed. The company’s “Think Beyond” initiative exemplifies a growth mindset since it invites any employee to present their own business ideas, and upon succeeding, enjoy the company’s financial support to launch their business.
Uzabase Sri Lanka continues to grow and illustrate what heights can be achieved when trust and honesty are placed above all. It prioritizes personal development whilst ensuring the company’s overall progress—the interrelationship of the two concepts is well ingrained.
