The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing organised the first promotional event for Ceylon Cinnamon with the participation of a delegation from the spices sector at the Condiments Expo held from 25 to 28 May 2024 in Laoling, Shandong Province in China.

Four companies including Pure Cinnamon Exports Ltd., Remark Fresh Ltd., Colombo Export and Import Agencies Ltd., and Peoples’ Organisation for Development Import and Export represented Sri Lanka at the Condiments Expo with a 10-member delegation.

The participants were provided with the opportunity of interacting with high-end spices manufacturers in Laoling City which is considered as the main spices manufacturing city with over 250 factories.

China’s spices and condiments market has reached $ 73 billion in 2022 and Laoling spice factories are importing from the global suppliers for the manufacturing of seasoning.

There is a high potential for Sri Lankan spice suppliers to access this market with high-quality Ceylon spices. The Sri Lankan companies that participated in the Condiments expo have already received orders.

Laoling City Government also organised factory visits, business matchmaking and presentation opportunities, and display in the Spices Museum in addition to the participation at Expo. The companies were provided with an opportunity to directly interact with the main importers and highlight the unique characteristics of Ceylon Cinnamon and other spices and also the value addition to the final product using Ceylon spices.

Adhering to China’s market access regulations for food and agricultural products imports, Ceylon Cinnamon market access protocol was signed between the Ministry of Plantation Industries of Sri Lanka and the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) during the visit of the President of Sri Lanka to China in October 2023. This has been a great achievement in expanding Sri Lankan export products into the lucrative Chinese market.
