Newburgh Green Teas Ltd. went on to win the prestigious award for the Best Green Tea Factory in Sri Lanka at the National Tea Awards ceremony organised by the Sri Lanka Tea Board on 8 December 2017 at the Nelum Pokuna Auditorium.

The smooth and fragrant green tea of Newburgh Tea Factory comes from the pristine Namunukula Mountains of Ella in the Uva Province.

Newburgh Green Teas Ltd. is a joint venture of three leading Sri Lankan tea firms - Hapugastenna Plantation Plc of Finlays, Imperial Teas Ltd. and Tea Tang Teas Ltd.

In a strategic move in 2009 to diversify the product range and to take advantage of opportunities in different market sectors, an existing black tea manufacturing factory in Newburgh estate was modernised and converted into a state-of-the-art green tea processing plant. As a new business entity, Newburgh Green Teas Ltd. commenced operations specialising in producing Chinese-style panned green tea for health conscious tea drinkers in overseas markets.  Within a short time of production, Newburgh Green Teas Ltd. began making a name for itself by walking away with the award for the All-Island Highest Sale Average in the Green Tea category from Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers Ltd.

Newburgh Green Teas Ltd. has emerged as a key contributor to the socioeconomic development of the Uva Province, taking a lead as a responsible corporate citizen committed to creating employment opportunities to educated youth born to estate worker parents.

In addition, recognising its social accountability efforts, Newburgh Green Teas Ltd. was feted at the Social Dialogue and Work Place Co-Operation Awards 2017 in the Manufacturing Sector (All category) at a ceremony organised by the Human Resource Development Unit of the Department of Labour.

This famed award is a reflection of how Newburgh Green Teas Ltd. promotes social dialogue and workplace cooperation to create awareness amongst both employers and employees, to enhance the creative potential of the organisation and produce a quality working environment while establishing mutually beneficial good industrial relations which validates Newburgh and its managing entity James Finlay plantations’ services principles and covenants of international instruments of ILO conventions in freedom of association, social security, occupational health and safety and vocational rehabilitation.

Newburgh Green Teas Ltd. has also achieved recognition in supply chain compliance by achieving certifications from the sustainable agriculture network Rain forest Alliance, ISO 22000:2005 food safety management, and possesses grade ‘A’ certification from the Ethical Tea Partnership.

Newburgh Green Tea Factory will continue to add stature to the tea industry in Sri Lanka through innovative and creative management and technical input, thereby ensuring this processing plant will sustain its status as a key stakeholder in the countries’ fast-changing business kaleidoscope by producing high-quality green teas adopting world-class best practices.
