Melstacorp Estates clinch record prices under Uva Medium category

Glen Alpin Estate, Badulla achieved a record price of Rs. 4,850 per kg for its FBOPF EX SP grade in the premium tea catalogue. 

Additionally, Pettiagalla Estate, Balangoda established an all-time record price of Rs. 1,180 per kg, for a grade of FBOPF 1 this week at the Colombo Tea Auction, Sale No. 11. These lines of tea were sold by John Keells Tea Brokers. 

Glen Alpin Estate is situated at an elevation, ranging from 1,182 m to 1768 m amsl. Tea fields at Pettiagalla Estate are situated at an elevation ranging from 1,220-1,550 m amsl. Both estates are wonderfully scenic and situated in the Uva Medium category. These estates are managed by Melstacorp PLC (a member of the Stassen Group) spearheaded by its chairman, legendary businessman Harry Jayawardena.

The estates produce the highest quality teas and have been consistently achieving top prices for their product. Glen Alpin Estate has a rich history, dating back to its inception in the year 1894, and is one of the oldest plantations in Sri Lanka. The estate was initially managed by Ouvah Ceylon Company Ltd., prior to nationalisation, and subsequently by Janatha Estate Development Board III. After privatisation, it was vested with Balangoda Plantations Plc, a subsidiary of the Stassen Group.

Pettiagalla Estate has a rich and diverse history, dating back to its inception in the year 1880, and is one of the oldest plantations in the plantation landscape of Sri Lanka. After privatisation of the management of the plantations in 1992, it was vested with Balangoda Plantations Plc, with Melstacorp PLC functioning as the Managing Agents. This estate produces unique teas, renowned for their exquisite quality, and has been consistently achieving top prices for teas produced. Some lines of teas produced at the estate are rare and highly sought after. They are currently sold in London, under the “Pettiagalla” marque.
