Acceding to the requested of the Sri Lankan Government at the third session of the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation between Sri Lanka and Myanmar, held in April 2019, Myanmar donated 15,000 teak seeds for the purpose of developing Sri Lanka’s agroforestry.
The ceremonial event to hand over the high-quality teak seeds was held at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar on 12 December.
Ambassador Nandimithra Ekanayake, representing the Sri Lankan Government, received the seeds from Myanmar’s Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Deputy Minister Dr. Ye Myint Swe.
The donated teak seeds have been collected from a genetically selected teak clonal seed orchard in Myanmar which was established in 1996. The conservation of teak genetic resources in Myanmar began in the 1980s as part of the East Pegu Yoma Project (EPP) with the support of the Asian Development Bank.
