The inaugural International Research Symposium covering areas related to local and international agricultural industries was held recently in Colombo with the participation of delegates from many Asian countries. The symposium was strengthened by its principal sponsor Biofilm Biofertilizer, an environmentally friendly 100% natural product which is being introduced to the world as a first, from Sri Lanka. Biofilm is manufactured with locally sourced natural ingredients within Sri Lanka and is free from any chemicals including heavy metals. Due to excessive usage of chemical fertiliser the soil of our country has now critically deteriorated with detrimental effects on vegetation and human life. In this backdrop, a group of Sri Lankan scientists led by Prof. Gamini Seneviratne from Sri Lanka’s foremost research institute, ‘Institute of Fundamental Studies’ (IFS) has developed a patented, new generation bio-fertiliser which can replace 50% of chemical fertiliser usage in major plantation crops. This revolutionary technology is a result of 10 years of dedicated research. Biofilm Biofertilizer is commercially manufactured by Lanka Bio Fertilizers Ltd., a subsidiary of Nature’s Beauty Creations Ltd., a pioneer and an advocate of environmentally friendly products and its research. The first international research symposium organised by the Sri Lanka Council for Agricultural Research Policy (SLCARP) was ceremonially inaugurated by the Chief Guest to the event Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa. Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeyewardena, SLCARP Chairman Dr. Jayantha Samarasinghe, local and foreign research scientists from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan were also present at the event. As the principal sponsor of the symposium the Chairman and Managing Director of Lanka Bio Fertilizers Limited Samantha Kumarasinghe emphasised that the organisation of such a symposium to discuss scientific research related to agricultural industries will undoubtedly help in developing much needed innovative technology for the local agricultural industry and that Lanka Bio Fertilisers Limited is honoured to be part of such an initiative as its principal sponsor. Further, Kumarasinghe highlighted that Biofilm Biofertilizer will help Sri Lanka to reduce its use of chemical fertiliser and facilitate the Government to save billions of rupees in foreign exchange spent annually on importation of chemical fertiliser. An agriculture exhibition was also held parallel to the research symposium.
