Bogawantalawa estates fetched the highest price of Rs. 650 per kilo for its BOP Fannings invoice sold at the Colombo auction on 17 September 2013. Bogawantalawa estate is owned and managed by Bogawantalawa Tea Estates PLC and the company produces some 4 million kilograms of BOP Fannings per year. It has its flagship brands (garden marks) such as Loinorn, Norwood, Kotiyagalla and Campion in addition to its Bogawantalawa garden mark.
Bogawantalawa teas are much sought after by discerning tea connoisseurs’ world over. Approximately 80% of the teas are bought by fifty discerning buyers. These include Unilever, Dilmah, Mitsui through Heritage teas, Coca-Cola through Walters Bay/US and Tetley’s through Tea Tang etc.
The continued commitment demonstrated by the estate managers in the overall improvements in product quality has been the significant contributory factor to make BTEPLC garden marks highly sought-after teas at the Colombo auctions. This goes to prove that tea value addition is not just about packaging or making tea bags with or without artificial flavours, but about meeting the end customer’s needs by delivering a superior quality product.
