The Government is to ban the export of sub-standard cinnamon from January next year. This decision has been taken since the genuine cinnamon exported from Sri Lanka has earned a reputation as the best cinnamon in the world.
Export Agriculture Crop Promotion Minister Reginald Cooray addressing the Southern Provincial Export Agriculture Crop Cultivators’ meeting at Nupe Cultural Centre in Matara said that plans are afoot to redevelop the country’s export agriculture crop cultivation sector and the genuine cinnamon exported by Sri Lanka has a great demand in the world market.
He said that cassia strain of cinnamon, which is considered as an inferior quality produced in other countries, has no place in the international market and there is also a fear that persons consuming them would get cancer.
Minister Cooray said that since recently most estate owners and proprietors in the Deniyaya region in the Matara District have started abandoning their tea cultivations and instead taken to growing cinnamon on a large scale.
He said that the possibility of establishing cinnamon processing factories in the country is also being explored by his Ministry. He said that more land in the southern region has been brought under cinnamon cultivation and over 60% of the total production of cinnamon in Sri Lanka is being produced in the southern part of the country.
