Around 500 island-wide farmers; associations in Sri Lanka will join together to form a broad forum for farmers in the country, a representative said.
National Organiser of the All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation, Provincial Councilor Namal Karunaratne said that 200 farmers’ associations have already agreed to join a united platform for farmers.
He explained that despite the fact that there are a large number of farmers in the country, they are scattered across the country and have been unable to form a joint forum to speak out their problems.
He observed that farmers have been isolated in their struggles to find solutions to their long standing problems.
According to Karunaratne, once the broad platform is set up, the joint farmers’ forum would establish district level committees that would bring to the main forum the problems faced by farmers in different areas.
The joint farmers’ forum is looking at launching an islandwide campaign to win the now defunct farmers’ pension scheme and solutions to their long standing problems.
