A total of 7.4M/Kgs came under the hammer this week. There was good general demand particularly for the better teas whilst the poorer types were irregular.
Ex Estate offerings recorded a marginal increase and totalled 1.2M/Kgs. The quality of teas from the Western and Nuwara Eliya planting districts were selectively improved whilst teas from Uva/Udupussellawa regions showed a general decline.
Best Western BOPs where quality was improved gained Rs. 10-20 per kg whilst others were irregular and at times lower by a similar margin, the corresponding BOPFs sold around last week’s levels. In the below best category brighter improved sorts gained irregularly whilst the corresponding BOPFs where quality was maintained sold around last week’s levels, others declined up to Rs. 20 per kg.
Plainer BOP/BOPFs often declined by Rs. 5-10 per kg particularly for the poorer leaf types. Nuwara Eliya BOPs were generally firm, whilst the BOPFs gained by Rs. 20/- per kg and more. Udapussellawa BOP/BOPFs declined by Rs. 10 per kg and substantially more for the poorer types. Uva BOPs were irregular whilst the corresponding BOPFs lost up to Rs. 20 per kg following quality. High and Medium Grown CTCs mostly sold around last week’s levels whilst the Low Grown types were irregular. There was renewed interest for liquoring leafy teas.
Low Growns comprised of approximately 3.5M/kgs in the Leafy/Tippy catalogues this week. There was fair demand. In the Leafy catalogue better BOP1/OP1s were irregular whilst others sold around last levels. PEK/PEK1s too were mostly firm with the exception of the teas at the lower end that declined Rs. 5-10 per kg. Select best OPs were barely steady whilst others and OPAs were firm. In the Tippy catalogue better FBOP/FF1s together with the cleaner secondaries were firm to dearer. At the lower end too prices for the cleaner types were firm to dearer. Tippy invoices too were mostly firm to irregularly dearer, particularly where quality was maintained. CIS, Turkey, Dubai, Saudi Arabia together with Iraq were active this week.
