MUMBAI (Reuters): Tea production in India fell 14.7% to 67.21 million kg in April from a year earlier, the state-run Tea Board said in a statement, as excessive rainfall hit plucking in the top producing north-eastern state of Assam.

Production in Assam fell 11.3% to 31.16 million kg from a year earlier, the Board said.

India, the world’s second biggest tea producer, exports CTC (crush-tear-curl) grade mainly to Egypt, Pakistan and the UK, and the orthodox variety to Iraq, Iran and Russia. The country’s tea exports in April fell 2.2% from a year earlier to 11.80 million kg.
